American Idol and Irwin Schiff

David Axelrod is Barack Obama’s senior aide and one of them men chiefly responsible for Obama’s ascent to the White House. Obama has, as of late, had many problems getting his cabinet-level appointments confirmed. CNN got his opinion on Sunday:

“Choosing Cabinet members isn’t like American Idol. You don’t throw contestants out there and let the American people vote. We’re going through a thoughtful procedure to fill these posts. We want to get it right.”

Republican Senator Judd Gregg and former Democratic Governor Bill Richardson both withdrew their names from consideration for the Commerce Secretary. Gregg withdrew because of disagreements regarding the stimulus bill, Richardson withdrew because of a corruption probe involving a company that did business with the state while he was Governor.

Three other appointees have been given quite a berrating by Congress because of unpaid taxes. Tom Daschle, Obama’s appointment for Secretary of Health and Human Services, withdrew because of backtaxes he owed. Nancy Killefer, Obama’s appointment for a new post concerning government transparency, witdrew her name because of tax issues. Lastly, Tim Geithner, who was confirmed, now serves as the Secretary of the Treasury and oversees the IRS. Geithner also had not paid his taxes.

So who should President Obama pick for Commerce Secretary? Well, in sticking with current trends of corruption (Bill Richardson) and tax evasion (Daschle, Killefer, and Geithner)–I’d suggest Irwin Schiff!
